Are Guitar Lessons Worth It? An Expert's Perspective

Learning to play the guitar is a rewarding experience, and there are two main ways to do it: self-taught guitar or guitar classes. Self-taught guitar is great for those who want more freedom in their learning, while guitar lessons are better for those who need or want a mentor figure. Taking classes can help you stay motivated and improve quickly with well-planned instructions and exercises. An experienced guitar teacher can also provide many more connections with the music industry than you can get on your own.

Electricity is generally easier to learn than acoustics, as there is less tension in the strings and you don't have to work so hard to really play. However, it's still recommended to learn the basics from a teacher before moving on to acoustics. Online resources can be helpful, but they often assume that you have a basic knowledge of the fundamentals, which can make it difficult or impossible to get something from watching those kinds of lessons. I wouldn't have made a career as a musician if I hadn't taken those guitar lessons.

After having learned from many in-person teachers, Skype lessons and using online lessons, I believe that taking classes is the best way to learn to play the guitar. On the first day of classes, I learned how to hold the guitar so as not to silence the strings consistently. After taking the right lessons with a teacher for a while and learning basic music theory, I was able to go much further with online lessons. If you happen to choose a bad guitar teacher, don't be afraid to leave classes and find a better teacher.

It's also important not to just study from a single source (whether it's a method book, an online course, a teacher's own course or teaching resources, etc.). So are guitar lessons worth it? The answer depends on your goals and how much effort you're willing to put in. If you can afford classes, they are definitely worth it as they provide a full learning experience with help tailored to you that you can't really get with online resources (but you can always supplement the lessons with online things).
